The Society's mission to collect, preserve, share and create materials that establish or illustrate the history of Plainfield, Vermont. The Society also works with town officials, with the state historical society, with teachers and students at Twinfield, and with individuals in carrying out this mission. It is a volunteer, nonprofit association made up of dues-paying members who make the decisions and carry out the work of the organization.

The Society's collection of Plainfield history materials includes 700 slides of historical photographs from private collections and 36 oral history tapes made between 1989 and 1991. In 2008, the Historical Society republished its 140-page Pictorial History of the Town of Plainfield (1870–1940) (originally published in 1993), which was based on materials in our collection. Artifacts and printed materials donated to the Plainfield Historical Society over the years are housed in a small building on School Street owned by the town of Plainfield, which once served as the village's first firehouse.

In addition to producing an annual wall calendar of historic interest as a fund-raiser, the Society has, for the past two years, prepared an historical display for exhibit at the Annual Vermont History Expo on the Tunbridge Fairgrounds. The 2008 exhibit featured the results of an archaeology project undertaken by the Society at Washburn Park in Plainfield, the site of a series of blacksmith shops dating back to 1803. This project was done in conjunction with students in Mary Whalen's Honors History class at Twinfield High School, in association with the Vermont Historical Society. These are just some of the activities in which the members of our growing organization are involved.
